Preston substitute Nathan Ellington provided a thrilling finish to this match against managerless Coventry as he netted the winner deep into stoppage time to keep alive North End’s hope of staying in the Championship.
It probably won’t happen but after interviewing manager Phil Brown afterwards for Sky Sports I felt he’s still got plenty to look forward to next year, regardless of what division Preston are in. The same cannot be said for his opposite number, Coventry caretaker boss Andy Thorn..When I asked him the question ‘Do you want the job permanently?’ I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d said ‘No’.
After all, managing Coventry City Football Club is the most boring job in English football! The club has been in existence for over 125 years but they just don’t do anything – they don’t go up, they don’t go down, they don’t go on cup runs… they are the football equivalent of a couch potato! One FA Cup win in 1987 and one relegation at the start of the millennium but since then, nothing.
And then they get an ambitious and optimistic manager in Aidy Boothroyd, who has the nerve to move them into the play-off positions before Christmas, the club quickly resort back to type and… settle for mid-table mediocrity. So he gets the sack… boring, boring Coventry!
