Arsene Wenger will be rubbing his hands together at knowing one of his transfer targets will be available in the summer on a free transfer, unless Liverpool beat him to the signing this January.
Schalke winger Lewis Holtby has chosen not to renew his contract meaning he will be available for free in the summer but the German side may choose to cash in on the German international in January to make the most of the youngster.
Holtby’s dad, an Englishman stationed in Germany with the British forces, is an Everton fan and Holtby has been quoted as saying “My father was born in England and was an Everton fan since the age of five. He immediately infected me with the Everton virus! Since then I have been an Everton fan and have always followed their games.”
However, Holtby has admitted being an Everton fan wouldn’t stop him from signing for Merseyside rivals Liverpool, even if it would upset his dad, “I wouldn’t even rule out Liverpool, even if it would be tough for my dad – he’s an Everton fan”.
Holtby, who could have played for England before being picked by Germany, would suit the style of play of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers or Arsene Wenger’s passing philosophy at Arsenal. The 22 year old is known in the Bundesliga for his neat link play on the wings, clever through balls and dribbling skill.
