There is currently a raft of exceptional young goalkeepers currently plying their trade across the continent at present. The likes of David De Gea, Hugo Lloris and Manuel Neuer continue to excel at their respective club’s, forming the cornerstone for the new ‘sweeper keeper’ breed of ‘keeper. However, the trio are comfortably eclipsed in the rankings by Chelsea loan star Thibaut Courtoius.
The young Belgium international has spent the past 18 months on loan with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and has been a pivotal member of the team that currently find themselves in 2nd, not to mention the Los Rojiblancos side that secured Europa League and European Super Cup glory last season.
Courtois, it has to be said, has emerged as one of the finest young goalkeepers in Europe over the past year-and-a-half, continuously excelling in between the sticks at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Such has been his appearances for Atletico that it comes as no shock to read that they’re keen on keeping him in Spain for another year.
Dominating in the penalty area and with seven international caps to his name despite being just 20-years-old, Courtois is one player that will undoubtedly go onto becoming one of football’s finest ‘keepers in years to come if he continues his rapid rate of development. With current Chelsea number one Petr Cech showing no signs of slowing after yet another consistent season at Stamford Bridge, keeping Courtois in Madrid may be a wise move for all parties involved.
