Classics from the archive: Maradona vs Nottingham Forest (Video)

Time now for another video from the archive and we have Diego Maradona during his forgotten Barcelona days against Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in a 1983 pre-season friendly.

Ah yes, the mecurial Maradona. Even on a pitch that looks like 100 rugby players have just done their training on it he still manages to score a goal that most players won’t be able to pull of in their whole careers.

It’s easy to sometimes forget that Maradona was a Barcelona player for two seasons because of his heroics with Napoli in the subsequent years. He wasn’t the last diminutive Argentine to grace the Nou Camp turf, either.

During the late 70s to mid 80s, Forest enjoyed their most successful period with Brian Clough at the helm. A league title a season after being promoted to First Division, League Cups and, quite remarkably, consecutive European Cups in 78-80.

I doubt that anybody these days would allow two teams from two of Europe’s top tiers to play on a such a waterlogged pitch. The fact that the two teams were able to play a game of football on the ‘pitch’ is even more surprising especially considering nobody had even bothered to turn up.

Anyway, enjoy this gem from the archive.
