3 reasons why Chelsea need to forget about Robert Lewandowski and offer for £55m striker

The whispers of Robert Lewandowski making a sensational switch to Chelsea when Jose Mourinho takes over the reins at Stamford Bridge are getting a little out of hand, with some Blues fans smugly believing that it is a done deal. However, it is likely that the Polish ace will end up with his current teammate Mario Gotze at Bayern Munich, so here are three reasons why Roman Abramovich should turn his attention away from Lewandowski and towards Napoli goal-gobbler Edinson Cavani.

1) Napoli raising the white flag

The fact that the Serie A side have conceded defeat in the fact that Cavani will be leaving sooner rather than later can only help those chasing his signature. A fee of about £55m may be in order to secure the Urugauyan’s services, but considering they spent close to that on a floundering Fernando Torres tells you that they are not scared of taking risks with money.

2) Goals Gals Goals

It has been hard to read a newspaper or football site without reading articles about how many goals Robert Lewandowski is netting right now, but not many pointing out that Cavani actually has three more league goals than the Poland international. Cavani’s 26 goals in 31 Serie A games this term is nothing short of incredible, and although Lewandowski’s 23 in 29 is mightily impressive, the South American just edges is on league goals.

3) Versatility

As well as being a natural in the lone striker role, something which has become the norm in modern day football, Cavani can play on either wing. His speed makes him a nuisance down the flanks and his intelligence on the ball allows him to make defenders look like fools when they try to match him. Lewandowski is prominently a out-and-out striker but he has been known to drift back to collect the ball.
