It’s often the case that the professional eye doesn’t meet the spectator’s eye when it comes to football. While an expert on the game, someone who writes about football for a living, or perhaps a former professional, dissects things in greater detail than your average fan, naturally. Glen Johnson will be aware of that. After years of abuse about the way he bombed forward he pulled his socks up and took advice on board. Now, under Brendan Rodgers, he is one of the finest full-backs in the Premier League. But does he deserve a new deal at Liverpool?
He’s currently out of action due to injury, but has started how he finished last season. Last term Johnson appeared in 36/38 Premier League games for the Reds, winning 59% of his duels and creating 46 chances and completing 82% of his passes.
Johnson also perfected the balance in driving down the flank and sticking to his position and as a result he averaged six defensive actions.
For me, Johnson should be offered a lucrative deal. His current one runs out in the summer and the Mirror are reporting that the England defender has to take a pay cut as a part of the deal.
A pay cut?! Is that what you get when you outshine the majority of your colleagues? Come on Liverpool, cough up.
