If you believe the reports going round today, including Goal.com, Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to get rid of Rickie Lambert. Just a few weeks ago Lambert was scoring for both club and country and was at the peak of his career, but now he’s being rumoured with a move away from St Mary’s. Sounds crazy, right? But here are three reasons why I think Saints should find a new home for the chunky target man.
1) Tactics
In reports it suggest that the Argentine boss’ main reason is that Lambert doesn’t fit in with what he is trying to do at the club. Lambert is not the most mobile outlet up top, and Pochettino’s pressing style may be affected by that. With big money signing Pablo Osvaldo coming into the club – a big man but a more agile one – it seems as though Lambert’s old-school ways are not what tickles the manager’s pickle.
2) £££
That’s right, players get sold for ridiculous amounts of money. Lambert isn’t getting any younger and it can only be a matter of time before his performances start reflecting that, so to cash in while he’s riding the wave of national recognition would be a shrewd move, in my opinion.
3) Old dog
As touched upon, there are fresher options out there for Southampton. Lambert is closing in on 32 years of age, and while there are players like Jay Rodriguez at the club pushing for a place it would be a good time to let them progress. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Lambert should be on his way just yet, but give him until January to increase his value and then flog him, in my opinion.
