Not many people will have heard of Saido Berahino until this weekend. A winner at Old Trafford is as good a way of making yourself known as any, and Berahino has taken his opportunities this season.
It may have only been his first league goal, but four goals in two carling cup has led to his Premier League inclusion. Three of those goals came in his first game when he came off the bench against Newport County to bag his hat trick. The other was in another impressive showing, this time against Arsenal.
This form has led to a swift England under 21 call up and he managed to score in both his first two games, the winner against Moldova and the other against Finland, where he rescued a point for his team.
It has been a quick rise for the Berundi-born striker who only last season was playing for Peterborough in the Championship, but scored just two goals in ten matches. He has played in all England youth sides and has also had loan spells at Brentford and Northampton but didn’t play regularly at either.
Berahino clearly hadn’t impressed the management of West Brom as his contract is still set to run out this summer. West Brom may have to move quickly as Berahino is likely to have attracted a lot of attention very quickly.
Having an opportunity to sink the champions at Old Trafford may have been too much for many other strikers to handle, but Berahino has showed confidence in abundance. It can sometimes take time for a player to flourish and WBA may have struck lucky and found another Lukaku in their ranks but let’s keep our feet grounded for now, he could end up being another Bebe!
