Per Mertesacker’s bullet header against England last night ensured that Germany made it six straight victories at Wembley, and also put England to their second defeat in as many games without a single goal. Arsenal fans had something to smile about, though, as their big centre-half continues his impeccable form.
In my eyes, Mertesacker is the best centre-back in the Premier League right now. He has made nine appearances in the league this season and scored one goal, but his duel success is what has impressed me so much.
He has won 62% of his tackles, 63% of his headers and completed 100% of his take ons. They rise, as well, in the Champions League to 75% tackle completion and 78% heading success.
He has averaged nine defensive actions per game in Europe while six in the Premier League and completed 91% of his passes in both competitions.
His leadership abilities have been displayed on numerous occasions and he has been a huge part of why Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League and top of their Champions League group.
For me it felt fitting that the former Werder Bremen defender scored the winner at Wembley last night as I firmly believe that he is the best centre-back in the Premier League.
