Xabi Alonso is a name held in the highest regard up in Liverpool. The Scousers love the Spaniard after his five-year stint at the club between 2004 and 2009 and there was talk of him returning to Anfield as his contract ran to an end at current club Real Madrid. However, those dreams were sadly short-lived as the midfielder has now signed a new deal in the Spanish capital, keeping him at the club until 2016, according to the Mirror.
So, not meaning to rub it in any more, here’s what you could have won.
The 31-year-old has been injured for the majority of the season but has now played their last four games in all competitions. The pass master has completed 91% of his passes in the league and created four scoring opportunities.
He has averaged three defensive actions per game and won half of his tackles and is slowly transforming back into the midfield general that he was once known as.
Current Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been equally impressed with his progress, saying: “Xabi is a vital player for Madrid now that he’s recovered from injury.”
Liverpool fans shouldn’t get upset however, as they still hold a solid amount of quality in the middle. Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva has bossed the pivots this season and they still have Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen in reserve.
