Being an Arsenal fan, I have got to witness some of the best football I have seen in years this season. We no longer have a soft centre and we are ripping teams apart with goals coming from all over the pitch. All the talk leading up to January, however, is about Arsene Wenger signing a striker to bolster our chances in winning the Premier League title, which, perhaps, is true. But I argue that we don’t necessarily need one to do so.
My thinking is this – Theo Walcott wants to play up top as a centre-forward, so why not let him when Olivier Giroud needs a rest?
Walcott has the speed, the movement and the composure in front of goal to lead a line efficiently, as we saw in glimpses last season. The 24-year-old scored 21 goals in all competitions last seasons while switching from the wing to up top, so giving him a more prominent role in the striker role could replicate his form.
Then, we have Yaya Sanogo to return. I may be clutching at straws but from what I have seen of the Frenchman before he signed for the Gunners he is well worthy of a back up spot.
Bendtner will probably be shifted out, but with Giroud, who is in marvellous form, Walcott and Sanogo, as well as the goals flowing from the midfield, I think we may have enough without splashing out on a big money striker.
Although it would be nice.
