Chelsea have the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of Group E as they take on the club who occupy bottom spot – Steaua Bucherest – this evening. It won’t be an easy game, though, so here are three things they should do to give themselves a better chance.
If I was Jose Mourinho, I would stick Andre Schurrle up front to exploit the Steaua backline with his pace, his composure and the way he can hit teams on the break.
Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o have scored just four goals between them this season whereas Schurrle has netted three himself.
Then I would use Mikel instead of Frank Lampard.
It is a game that needs players who are happy to knock the ball round with no real purpose to allow the more creative players to come and collect.
Steaua are there to be dominated and the strength in their side is nowhere near the levels that Chelsea hold.
This way will get a mixed response but I think John Terry needs to be dropped. He’s such a static player and as a result in his lack of mobility, whoever is partnering him in the centre of defence is left running for him.
