I expect Chelsea to be busy in the upcoming weeks, not only because I think they need a striker, but also because there are a few faces in the squad who aren’t getting a lot of action on the pitch. It could be that both of my concerns may be getting dealt with though, as the Mirror say Michael Essien is a target for old manager Rafa Benitez at Napoli, and the Daily Star say the Blues are set to bid for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa.
Starting with the deal that could potentially take Essien to Serie A. I think there is plenty more left in the midfielder’s tank but it is doubtful that we will get to see that again in a Chelsea shirt. He has played just five league games this season but has played just one full game, so a switch away from west London could be a positive move, especially as it’s a loan.
Costa is a deal that goes without saying – The Brazilian has scored 23 goals for Atleti in his 22 games and is the main reason, in my eyes, that the capital club are competing at the top with Barcelona.
He is strong, creative and most importantly can score goals, so for me if there is a chance of him arriving at Stamford Bridge then I think Jose Mourinho needs to do everything he can to make it happen.
