With just a handful of days left of the January transfer window, we can expect to see a flurry of activity across the country in terms of transfers. There have already been a few high profile deals go through – Juan Mata to Manchester United and Nemanja Matic to Chelsea the two that stand out for me – but I have a feeling there could be plenty more, with this being one of them. Arsenal are now being priced (by Sky Bet) at a staggering 1/4 to sign Schalke playmaker Julian Draxler.
With the Gunners being odds-on to sign the young Germany international there has to be something in it, and I for one think it would be a very good move for all parties.
Schalke would presumably get a handsome fee for the player, Draxler would be switching to a side on the up and with a strong chance of winning silverware this season, and Arsenal’s hopes of winning the title would undoubtedly be strengthened.
Although he is at his best when deployed as a central playmaker, Draxler can play on either flank and is just as effective when cutting in. He has been Schalke’s standout player for the last year or two and has flourished on the big stage despite still being just 20.
Imagine an attacking trio of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Draxler behind Olivier Giroud at the Emirates.
It could also solve the problem of a back up striker, as it would allow Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski to slot in up top whenever needed.
