Southampton’s youth academy is something that everyone has an opinion on. Having reeled out players such as Gareth Bale, the world’s most expensive player, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, there is another crop currently coming through the ranks at St Mary’s.
One of those is Calum Chambers, who is apparently on Arsenal’s radar ahead of a summer move. But what could he offer the Gunners should he pack his bags and head to the capital?
Firstly, Chambers is a right-back who has made a strong impression on the south coast so far. The 19-year-old has taken the place of Nathaniel Clyne, another young English full-back, and has played 21 Premier League games this season.
He is a player who likes to run at his opposite number and whip balls into the box, but hasn’t registered an assist to date. His passing has an 80% completion rate, but it is his defensive abilities that have impressed so far.
He has averaged 3.6 clearances, 2.1 tackles and almost two interceptions per game.
He fits into the Arsenal mould. He is young yet strong, attacking yet defensively adept, and looks as though he is always willing to learn.
Perhaps Arsene Wenger is the right man for him.
