Thomas Vermaelen is still technically the Arsenal captain, despite the fact that he has sat most of the last two seasons on the bench. The Belgian is out of contract next summer but could be heading to Italy, with Fiorentina supposedly interested. Here is why the Gunners should let him go.
Firstly, the two that Arsene Wenger has been choosing ahead of him, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, are far better than him technically, in my opinion. Vermaelen is better on the ball than the latter, but when it comes to marking, tackling and beating their opponent in the air, I would choose Koscielny every day.
If I was in charge of transfers this summer I would let Vermaelen go and look to sign a younger, fresher centre-half that will come in and challenge the first choice pairing.
Perhaps Liam Moore of Leicester, who fits the bill perfectly. Although he may not want to come in and play second-fiddle. He is big, strong and remarkable quick when he needs to be, and is also English.
Gooners, would you agree?
