Gareth Barry is a player who does what he needs to do. Nothing more. He’s a solid player who has never had the glitz and glamour of a football player attached to him, but has sculpted a successful career at the top of the game. Now, as his contract at Manchester City draws to a close, I would suggest that Arsenal take a punt on the free transfer.
Having played 653 games in the English top tier, Barry, for me, is one of the most underrated English midfielders in the game. His performances for Everton last season proved that.
If he was to join Arsenal, he would provide a defensive shield with Mathieu Flamini and allow the likes of Aaron Ramsey to get forward without worrying about their defensive duties so much.
Last season with the Toffees Barry formed a solid partnership with James McCarthy, playing 32 league games, making 86 tackles, 79 clearances and completing 87% of his passes.
For me it makes sense and would involve very little risk.
