Cesc Fabregas completed his move to Chelsea yesterday after weeks of being linked to various different Premier League clubs, such as Manchester United and his former club Arsenal. The news of his arrival at Stamford Bridge sparked an onslaught of abuse by Gunners across the globe, though that was met by smug remarks from Chelsea and Tottenham fans.
The signing is obviously a strong one and in my opinion makes Chelsea favourites for the Premier League title next season. However, Arsenal had first refusal on his signature and Arsene Wenger decided that he didn’t want to make a move.
So, what was Fabregas supposed to do? If Arsenal didn’t want him, was he supposed to turn down the supposed mega bucks for a move to Chelsea, or potentially rot at Barcelona?
For me Arsenal fans have no argument on this one. Loyalty is rare in football and those precious Gooners need to realise that. It’s a game. It’s a business. Players do not care about the fans when certain clubs are whispering sweet nothings in their ear.
Barcelona didn’t want him and neither did Arsenal. He has previously declared his love for the two but if they are rejecting his services then he has every right to do what he thinks is best for his career.
And his wallet.
