We have some news for Manchester United fans now, via the Telegraph. Arsenal centre-half Thomas Vermaelen has apparently agreed a deal to join the Old Trafford side this summer, though a fee must now be agreed between the clubs.
Arsenal have a host of players at the World Cup this summer and some have already impressed in their opening game – Joel Campbell for Costa Rica springs to mind. This afternoon offers the chance for another three Gunners to show what they can do on the big stage, with Germany taking on Portugal in Group G.
When Fabregas upped sticks and left his boyhood club Barcelona to join the Arsenal youth ranks, no one could have known how much impact he would have at the club. After over 300 first team appearances and 57 for the Gunners he returned to Camp Nou, only to sign for Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea this week. Needless to say, those affiliated with the Emirates club aren’t too happy.
Cesc Fabregas completed his move to Chelsea yesterday after weeks of being linked to various different Premier League clubs, such as Manchester United and his former club Arsenal. The news of his arrival at Stamford Bridge sparked an onslaught of abuse by Gunners across the globe, though that was met by smug remarks from Chelsea and Tottenham fans.
Different groups of supporters are used to different things. Real Madrid fans demand the very best and expect their players to run themselves into the ground for the cause, and when it doesn’t happen they often get frustrated. Karim Benzema found out that if you don’t comply with the fans’ wishes, they will make your time at the club as difficult as they can.
Although the World Cup kicks off today, I expect Premier League clubs to start naming some summer signings. One team that need a few bodies, in my opinion, is Arsenal – so here are four players that I would label contenders to be the first player to sign for the Gunners in the window.
Arsenal are said to be in talks with Gremio over a summer move for 21-year-old centre-half Bressan. I am in belief that the young defender would be a shrewd signing for the Gunners for a number of reasons, but only as long as Thomas Vermaelen is shown the exit over the next few months.
So, there we have it – Arsenal looked to have secured a deal for a new striker after a season of a lacklustre frontline. The Daily Mail says they intend to use the £3.5 million buy-back clause in Carlos Vela’s contract, but what would they be getting from the former Gunner the second time round?
