Manchester United set to swoop for World Cup winning duo including Arsenal target

According to reports in English Media outlet DAILY EXPRESS, Manchester United had reportedly sent scouts at Schalke to keep a close eye on German duo Julian Draxler and Benedikt Howedes. It is believed that Red Devils’ scouts were present at the Veltins-Arena and were keeping a close eye on their rumoured transfer targets.

Draxler has been a long term Arsenal target but given United’s potential transfer kitty, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him switch loyalties at end up at Old Trafford in the near summer. The German youngster can play in every midfield position, mainly in the chief attacking midfield role or even as a supporting striker down the middle. The 21 year old Draxler is a hot target for a majority of European clubs including Chelsea as has been reported in the story.

United though are also looking at Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes. January cannot come faster for manage Louis van Gaal who is desperate to strengthen his defensive back line. Howedes, playing as a left back was ever present in Germany’s world Cup triumph, but teh 26 year old primarily positions himself in the centre of the defense. It is his versatility that might have impressed Van Gaal who is known to also have checked with his availability when he was in charge at Bayern Munich.

Howedes though has a contract with the Bundesliga side till in 2017 and is valued at around €18m according to Goal. Thus his price tag too would be enticing for the Red Devils who might find Howedes as a cheaper option compared to Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. Howedes future is also not far from secure in Germany. The defender had earlier said that he would jump at the opportunity to ply his trade abroad if he gets a chance to do so, “I said it before that it could be an option to play for club abroad one day. To know about a new culture and environment.”

Arsenal Target Another World Cup Winner Other Than Khedira

What a time this is to be an Arsenal fan. A new season is just on the horizon and the Gunners are making the right noises in the market. According to reports in English media outlet Independent, manager Arsene Wenger now looks to cap off his successful summer transfer window by pursuing Schalke’s World Cup winner Benedikt Howedes.

The 26 year old is an astute defender who can play in centre back and also  slot in as a left back when required like he did for Germany in the World Cup in Brazil. Wenger had earlier said that he would love to make yet another quality addition to his already impressive squad.

The Frenchman said he was on the lookout for a defender after his side romped to a 3-0 win over Manchester City to win the Community Shield on Saturday, “If I can find another centre-back I will do it.”

Calum chambers can be thought of  a replacement after Arsenal sold Bacary Sagna to City and let Thomas Vermaelen to pursue his career at La Liga giants Barcelona.  But the former Southampton player is effective in playing as the right back and is only 19 years of age. Moreover any injuries to the first choice pair of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker will cast serious doubts on the London club’ credentials as Wenger looks to mount a serious Premier League title challenge.

Wenger’s love for shopping Germans isn’t quite a surprise as The Gunners already have a thriving Die Mannschaft contingent in MertesackerOzil, Podolski, Gnabry and Zelalem. Thus it would be easier for Howedes should he consider a switch.

The report from Independent claims Arsenal are also after Brazilian Luis Gustavo of Wolfsburg. However the player isn’t inclined for a move and recently said, “However, Gustavo has today said he is happy in Germany:  “I am back in training and I want to play on for Wolfsburg to help the team succeed.”

Sporting William Carvalho however remains a feasible option as Arsenal have the money from Vermaelen’s sale to Barcelona.
