Cole Signs With Celtic

Carlton Cole

Celtic have signed experienced striker, Carlton Cole after a training audition that has lasted over the past several weeks. Cole’s deal runs until 2017. The 32- year- old striker formerly played in the English Premier League with West Ham United and Chelsea FC. Cole made his earned salary in his prime while he was with West Ham, having 259 appearances and 57 goals for the Irons from 2006-2015.

Cole is a large presence at the striker position, boasting a 6’3” frame with massive strength. Although not the quickest and most finesse of strikers, Cole will compliment the other attackers on the Celtic squad using his size and strength to draw defenders in closer, creating more space for strikers like Leigh Griffiths, and Anthony Stokes.

When Cole spoke with the press after he signed his contract, he wanted to make sure he pointed out that it wasn’t about the money; but the pride of putting on the Hoops kit:

“It was the same at West Ham, if you put on that shirt and you wear it with pride, the fans would take to you and you would get a good rapport with the fans.
“That’s what I’m here for, I can see the same sort of thing at Celtic.”

Former Celtic boss, Neil Lennon has said that he was interested in bringing the striker to his new club, Bolton. But with Cole certain to make a move outside of his hometown of London for the first time, he wanted a new experience and a city that felt like home.

While it seems as though the striker found his “home away from home”, he may have to wait to make his debut with the Celts while he continues to heal from a nagging leg injury he picked up while in training during his audition. Cole says he seems to be making  progress towards returning to match fitness, something for Celtic fans to keep an eye out for within the coming weeks.

Carlton Cole Could Land At Celtic

Carlton Cole

Through the last week of September, former English International, Carlton Cole was in Glasgow for a week long training session for the Scottish giants in preparation to sign a new deal. The 31 year old was training with the Celtic first team when he tweaked his calf during the tryout and has been forced to take care of his injury instead of working on a deal. However, Cole remained in Glasgow during the International break and he seems to be recovering nicely. It appears that once the Hoops players return from break that Cole will get another shot at making the club.

The free agent has been fixated on the prospect of joining Celtic since he arrived during the last week of September and was watching from the stands in Paradise to watch the Hoops’ 6-0 thrashing against bottom feeders, Dundee FC. After the match, Ronny Deila made opening remarks toward Cole and stated that it was a perfect time for Cole to find an adjustment after being in London for his whole life.

“It is not (a trial), he has been in London his whole life, so he has to see what he is coming to and then we will see if it is something that he likes and we like as well.
“I think he is very good football player and he shown in the Premier League and also the Championship that he can score goals and he is different to what we have.”

If the Glasgow side are to sign the Londoner in the near future, defenseman Mikael Lustig has been quick to point out that Celtic must act quick because even though the striker is 31 years of age, he still has the experience that a lot of clubs are looking to have.

Carlton Cole will bring a different type of attacking option to the Celts that they aren’t used to having. Cole is a large and aggressive striker that can come in off the bench and help the offense inside the box, providing headers and drawing space from two or three defenders when he’s on the ball. Celtic can only get better in depth and the striker position should they sign Cole. The only worry right now is whether he can stay fit when playing at full pace. The good news is that while Cole was nursing his injured calf, he remained in Glasgow, barring any interest from rival clubs. It is also a good sign that Cole hasn’t left the city, which means he is becoming acclimated to his surroundings. The interest level seems to be extremely high from both player and club to get a deal signed as soon as possible.
