Every dog has its day, or so the saying goes. And the Daily Mail are reporting that Southampton look to be beating the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in the race for Celtic powerhouse Victor Wanyama. The Saints have supposedly agreed a £10m for the Kenyan who signed for the SPL champions for just £900,000 from Belgian Beerschot two years ago, which is a remarkable piece of business.
The 21-year-old has bossed the midfield north of the border and appears to fancy a shot in the English topflight while interest is rife and he has just a year left on his contract, and it was previously thought that Manchester United would be his chosen destination.
However, big-spending Southampton are really pushing for a European place next season and the chiefs in Hampshire are more than happy to back them financially. They splashed £13m on playmaker Gaston Ramirez last summer and have recently handed over £10m for Lyon defender Dejan Lovren and are expected to make a couple more to boot.
They are keeping their fingers and toes crossed that they can keep hold of teenage sensation Luke Shaw and add some real firepower up front to support Rickie Lambert, and with a few tweaks in the more defensive positions then they may be a force to be reckoned with next year.
Matt Le Tissier could still do a job…
