Oh what a beautiful game. Last night I sat through what was without doubt one of the most enthralling of international friendlies that I have ever watched. The game itself couldn’t have had a more fitting ending with Gyan’s perfect climax to a memorable fixture. It took me back to another beautiful story I came across about a year ago thanks to what is fast becoming football’s most glamourous yet untold heralds.
The most dedicated of football fans may remember Kim Grant, a Ghanaian striker who played for Charlton, Millwall and Yeovil Town amongst others. Grant has since returned to his roots, retiring from playing with a slightly different approach than the average Joe. The ex-international has poured his fortune and love for Ghanaian football into a brand new club, FC Takoradi. Making huge strides over the last 18 months in terms of development, the team has recently begun their first campaign in the Ghanaian 2nd division, zone 2A.
They’re all about giving young African players a chance. Grant has set the club up from top to bottom, including the fantastic PAA Grant Academy which hopes to give youngsters the best opportunity possible. With a distinct focus on seeing young African talent make it into the professional game, Takoradi will hopefully see that entertaining side of Africa expand to new, beautiful heights.
Despite a debut defeat to Young Wages FC, Takoradi gained their first point following a 0-0 draw in their second fixture against local rivals Apremdo Kesewa FC on Sunday gone. Keep your eyes peeled on their fortunes as the club progresses and you never know the next Gyan, Essien or Muntari could soon be seen sprinkling the African magic en route from Takoradi.
