When you’re covering a football match in which you don’t know too much about the two teams and don’t really have any preference who wins, the thing you want more than anything is a decent contest.
Chesterfield vs Port Vale provided exactly that for me. Although the home side are running away with League 2 and could go up before Easter, Vale are pushing for a promotion spot – so both teams desperately wanted to win this game. As a result it was a really good match, with Chesterfield edging it thanks to two goals in the second half. It was the perfect reminder that you don’t have to watch a top division match to see some quality football. And on a day when Wayne Rooney shouted expletives into a TV camera after netting a hat-trick for Man Utd, you might also see players with a lot more class!
