I don’t think my wife has much sympathy for Premier League footballers, sorry, I’ll rephrase that, I don’t think anyone has much sympathy for Premier League footballers.
But she is under the firm belief that their frequent calls for a mid-winter break should be answered in the affirmative. Or at least I assume that’s what she meant when she said: ‘the football’s not on the telly again, surely they shouldn’t be playing every single day over the Christmas and New Year period!’
She’s got a point because the amount of matches over the last few weeks has been relentless. You might think this is good for a reporter needing work and there’s no doubt the opportunity to earn a few extra quid is something I will never turn down. But you can lose track of where you are, where you are supposed to be, which games you’ve watched and which games you’ve not watched! Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been to Swansea, Huddersfield, Northampton, Blackpool, Hull and Peterborough, as well as watching a selection of league and cup games on television. With Thierry Henry’s amazing return for Arsenal ending the crammed fixture sequence, it’s time for me to enjoy a mid-week football break… I’m off to Disneyland Paris for a couple of days!
