With all the international football that has been taking place over the last week or so, my mind tracked back to the European championships of this past summer and the incredible performances that Andrea Pirlo was able to produce.
It is those kind of individual displays of footballing superiority that legends are made of and I would like to share with you my favourite legend-making performance as it were. The 2006 World Cup belonged to one man: Zinidene Zidane. Much like Pirlo, Zidane was entering the twilight of his career and to say that he went out of in a blaze of glory is an understatement.
Balls to winning the trophy, thought Zidane, he already has a World Cup winner’s medal to his name (not to mention a European one too) I’m going to headbutt this cretin who has just insulted my family. Come on, if you were Zidane tell you wouldn’t do the same?
I digress. His finest moment came against Brazil, who were tournament favourites, in the quarter finals as he put on an absolute footballing masterclass. Enjoy.
