Surely this time?
They have bags of history behind them and have experienced the highs and lows. Surely this season Grimsby Town can return back to the Football league and look to push themselves back up to being a well known Football League team once again.
Now I have followed Grimsby Town over the years as they are my Dad’s team and my local team that I support. They have been at the top of Division 1 (all be it for a couple of weeks) and they have also been near the bottom of the Conference Premier in the last 15 years.
But now this could be the season that the Mariners finally return to the Football league after a 3 year absence which ended a 117 year stay in the Football league.
Last season Grimsby came so close to reaching the play-offs after they recovered from a poor start to go unbeaten in two months, they missed out on a play-off spot on the last day of the season. This season contrast to last, Town have started really well. They are unbeaten in 10 league matches and are currently 6th place and are only a point off the play-off places. It is quite tight at the top of the Conference so a couple of good results can change everything.
The Mariners have only lost one game this season but their down side is they have drawn quite a few games. However they are without top scorer from last season Liam Hearn who is recovering from an Achilles injury and yet they are still banging the goals in.
What has made the Mariners so successful so far this season is that there have been goals coming from all over the pitch. It was feared that without Hearn the goals would dry up but they haven’t. The top scorer Nathan Pond has only 3 goals and yet the team have already scored18 goals. As for the defence, they have been very tight and there is a clear understand between the back four and James McKeown in goal. This has been demonstrated by the fact that they have only conceded 7 goals so far.
If Grimsby Town can continue this superb run of form then surely the team can achieve something they so desperately want as a club. Promotion back into the Football league. As many have said before, once you enter the Conference it is extremely hard to get out of it.
