I disagree with Gallas disagreeing with Wenger

Following Arsenal’s AGM last week, in which Arsene Wenger claimed securing a Champions League place is more important than winning the FA or Capital One Cup, it was always evoke a reaction from all those associated with football.

On Tuesday, it was the time of Tottenham Hotspur captain William Gallas to speak out about his remarks. The Frenchman, who played for four years under Wenger during his stint with Arsenal, believes it is wrong of the Gunners boss to dismiss the domestic trophies so candidly.

However, I, personally, have to disagree with Gallas on his remarks towards Wenger’s comments. While fans are concerned with the glory that associates itself with the game, it is important for clubs to focus on the financial gain, due to the altering stipulations associated with the game.

Owners are now focused of profiting from football, rather than picking up lessened silverware, for example, the FA and Capital One Cup. Qualifying for the Champions League stands to create a larger financial windfall compared to picking up domestic trophies.

It’s hard to admit, but with the way the game is evolving, making money is the most important factor with the game at present. Granted, finishing second, third or fourth won’t see a team lift a trophy, unless of course they’re based in the Championship, League 1 or League 2.

Yet, it’s the financial gain that comes with the qualification for the Champions League that appeals to club owners. So while Gallas is right in saying that the glory of lifting a trophy is vital to the game, unfortunately the FA and Capital One Cup is further down the priority list with regards to measuring success throughout the season.
