With the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Theo Walcott, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is clearly keen on strengthening his front-line, should the England international opt against signing a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

As many are aware, Walcott’s current deal with the Gunners expire next summer and the Frenchman recently revealed he is keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal by the time Christmas rolls around; just over seven weeks time.

His recent display against Reading, in which the 23-year-old netted a hat-trick in a remarkable 7-5 thriller between the two Premier League sides, will surely strengthen his cause for a new contract, with many a Gunner now believing he is ready to lead the front-line rather than perform on the wing.

Yet, the Frenchman appears hesitant that Walcott will extend his current contract and has already earmarked his possible replacement. It comes in the form of Andre Schurrle Bayer Leverkusen, many of whom will remember was subject to intense speculation from Chelsea over the summer.

Well, it now seems Wenger is keen to pounce on the 21-year-old and keep him all to himself. The young Germany international has continued to impress during the current Bundesliga campaign, netting twice in 14 games for Leverkusen.

Schurrle, it has to be said, operates in a similar position to Walcott, often utilised on the wing but can play as a striker and perhaps to better effect than his English counterpart. Should Wenger win the race to sign the youngster, it would be a major coup for the Gunners, who, following the departure of Robin van Persie, have appeared light up front, regardless of the summer purchases of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.
