Smith is a good signing for Millwall, but leaves Spurs short

Fans love a home grown prodigious youngster and sending them out on loan makes sense, in terms of development. Once a player joins a team, be it in the same division or one lower down, fans will instantaneously take an interest in the club they are moving to. This now applies to Tottenham Hotspur defender Adam Smith.

The youngster secured a three month loan switch to Championship outfit Millwall, which is a good move for the youngster. At 21 years of age, Smith needs first-team football in order to continue his footballing education.

Following successful spells with Bournemouth and MK Dons, coupled with a three game stint with Leeds United, Smith has showcased his potential to the watching world. His performances saw fans tip him to become Kyle Walker’s understudy, with those focused on the results of the reserve and youth team predicting the right-back to challenge his compatriot for a starting spot.

Yet, even with Walker the undisputed number one in the position, Smith’s loan will surely leave Spurs short in the back-line. At present, the right-back is the only fully fit full-back available to Andre Villas-Boas.

With Benoit Assou-Ekotto still nursing a knee problem and Kyle Naughton making just two appearances since a foot injury he sustained in the 0-0 draw with Lazio in September, the former Sheffield United trainee is still someway from full fitness.

While Jan Vertonghen has proved an adequate stand-in at left-back through Assou-Ekotto’s injury, it’s clear to see the Belgian is better suited in the heart of the defence. With Smith’s loan deal, chances are the Cameroon international is closing in on a return to fitness, but even still while it’s essential Smith gains first-team experience, something he is likely to achieve at Millwall, Spurs remain light in defence, especially at full-back.
