Arsenal’s tendency to play completely bonkers games in the League Cup, as displayed in their 7-5 victory of Reading, is not something that has come about recently.
Arsene Wenger has always used the competition to bleed in younger players and give them an opportunity to showcase their talents and it usually results in some fantastic football. Everything is a little more laid back in the League Cup so the goals flow in easier and the defending somewhat shoddy.
Take this example from 2007 where Arsenal thumped Liverpool 6-3 at Anfield.. A truly remarkable scoreline with an even more remarkable four goals for the man they call ‘The Beast’ Julio Baptista. That Arsenal team included a very young Cesc Fabregas, Jeremie Aliadiere and a raw Alex Song. That night they dazzled, playing with that signature Arsenal style and simply overwhelmed Liverpool.
