Can Wigan topple the Reds at Anfield again?
Whilst some people may believe Wigan Athletic have outstayed their welcome in the Premier League, the club continues to prove why they deserve their place in the top flight each year. However, they do this by not only securing a place within the top 17 of England’s first division, but also by pulling off some quite extraordinary results.
One of the Latics’ biggest wins of last season was at a place where, once, away teams would have to put on the performance of their lives just to get a draw. When they took on Liverpool at Anfield in March, Wigan defied the odds and defeated the Reds to secure a massive three points and boost their survival hopes.
It could be argued that this victory was a turning point in Wigan’s season, as Roberto Martinez’s men would go on to record further scalps the following month. In April, the club took their first ever points off Manchester United in a historic 1-0 home win, whilst Newcastle would be on the receiving end of a 4-0 thrashing at the DW Stadium only a couple of weeks later.
With every year’s experience they gain in English football’s top league, Wigan seem to find new ways of shocking the footballing world and proving the pundits wrong. As with several teams, their aim never differs from avoiding relegation, something they have managed to achieve every season since they were promoted. This achievement makes Wigan one of only 10 current top flight teams to have never been relegated from the Premier League. More impressively, however, is the fact that, of these, Wigan are one of only three clubs who were not founding members of England’s revamped first division in 1992.
Before the season began, nobody could have predicted that after 11 Premier League games only a point would separate Liverpool and Wigan. With that being the case, can the Latics compound Brendan Rodgers’ side’s misery by leapfrogging them in the table?
