Prior to kick off between West Ham United and Stoke City on Monday night, Twitter went into meltdown once again. This time, news quickly spread that Mark Hughes had reportedly been sacked as manager of Queen’s Park Rangers.
The West London outfit have just come off the back of the surprise 3-1 home defeat to Southampton – a game dubbed ‘El Sackico’. However, the early rumours proved to be premature, with the club announcing that Hughes was to take charge of first-team duties first thing Tuesday morning.
Yet, many believe that it would be the right move of R’s chairman Tony Fernandes to show Hughes the exit door and despite disagreeing with the majority in the past, I can’t help but agree with them. With the money the former Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City manager has spent this summer, QPR should be higher up the Premiership table than they currently find themselves.
But, with 12 games played and only four points mustered, all of which have come through draws, it’s surely time for Fernandes to hand ‘Sparky’ his P45. The performances have been lackadaisical and lacking any form of drive that fans would hope to see from a group of players in their current predicament.
Fans are now beginning to see through the Hughes charade and have called upon Fernandes to wield the axe before it’s too late. Furthermore, the name Harry Redknapp has begun to emanate around Loftus Road, with the veteran boss fabled for his ‘Houdini’ act of turning teams around – his exploits with Tottenham Hotspur a testament to this.
Nevertheless, if QPR are to remain within the confines of the Premiership for the new season, ridding Hughes would be the best move for the club to take.
