Have Wigan outstayed their welcome in the Premier League?

After coming up to the Premier League in 2005, Wigan Athletic have never looked back.

The Latics enjoyed a successful debut season in the top flight, reaching the League Cup final and securing 10th place in the Premier League, their highest ever league placing to date.  That remains the only time Wigan have finished in the top half, with the club often flirting with relegation before making a narrow escape.

Unlucky to lose to a Mikel Arteta penalty at home to Arsenal, Roberto Martinez’s side currently occupy 18th place in the league.  Despite playing some neat football, the question remains whether Wigan have a player who can get them the goals needed to avoid the drop.  Since arriving in the Premier League, the club’s top scorer each season has rarely reached double figures.  Franco Di Santo was just shy on nine last year, but can he or Arouna Kone do the business this time around to get them out of trouble?

Each year pundits say that Wigan don’t have enough to stay up and each year the club continue to prove them wrong.  Regardless of predictions, Latics fans know that they have it all to do again if they are to remain one of only four non-founding members of England’s first division never to have been relegated from the Premier League.
