We look at another 2 results that you wouldn’t have had on your accumulator this weekend during the FA Cup 3rd round.
Another non-league side booked their place in the next round with a triumph over a Championship team, but unlike Cardiff, Wolves are struggling in quite a bad way at present. That will not stop everybody connected to Luton Town celebrating the win and the champagne will taste that little bit sweeter for the fans after the hardships they have suffered over the last few years.
It was in the 46th minute when Alex Lawless smashed in a volley for his side to take the lead and ensure hero status at Kenilworth Road. Wolves had nothing to offer and with only 3 shots on target during the 90 minutes and the result ultimately proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as Stale Solbakken was relieved of his managerial duties after the game.
This one is not so much of a shock but a result that crippled a few of my bets! A remarkable individual performance from Danny Hylton secured Aldershot as a ball in the bag for Sunday’s 4th round draw with a hat-trick against Rotherham. The win was also a significant one for the club – it is the first time they have reached this round of the competition since they reformed in 1992. Even more reason to celebrate then, and a close-range strike, a low, drilled effort and an instinctive header from Hylton sparked the party. Only a Lee Frecklington penalty saved them from a barren goal-tally in the tie but they will be understandably gutted with the below-par performance.
So will Sunday have the same amount of excitement to offer us?
Well, with Mansfield hosting Brendan Rodgers and his Liverpool side and Arsenal travelling to Swansea, you can bet that there will be a few twists to come.
