It’s become a transfer that has flip-flopped more times than an Emmanuel Adebayor retirement decision, but the Loic Remy saga looks set to continue, until the end of the week at least. The Frenchman is expected to depart from Marseille this month, with Queen’s Park Rangers initially, only for Newcastle United to strike a deal to sign the striker.
Yet, while it appeared that the Magpies had secured his signature, it emerged on Monday night that Remy had, after initially turning down QPR, supposedly come close to agreeing personal terms with the R’s, with the 26-year-old reported to be pocketing around £80k per week.
Many have questioned why he’d turn down a move to Newcastle, who possess arguably the largest French contingent in England, to sign for Premier League bottom dwellers QPR. Well, you can all but guess it’s a case of money, judging from his reported pay packet.
With the west London side inadvertently staring relegation in the eyes, club owner Tony Fernandes is keen for the club to secure their top flight status at whatever cost. A drop down in divisions could prove detrimental to the long term future of the R’s and it’s pivotal they retain their place in the Premier League.
While Remy has netted just three times in 23 appearances for Marseille this season, he still has the capability to turn a game within his teams favour in the blink of an eye. His capability to drift in from the wing is reminiscent to that of former Arsenal hero Thierry Henry, albeit a poundland equivalent.
Either way, with a footballers career as short as it is, the opportunity to earn as much money from the game as possible is too hard to turn down and for that reason it will see Remy secure a move to Loftus Road rather than St. James’ Park.
