City don’t need Cavani unless they’re planning on selling in the summer

When a striker continuously nets on a consistent basis, interest from a number of football’s biggest clubs comes as no surprise. With Edinson Cavani, it’s no different following his goalscoring exploits for Napoli this season. Manchester City have confirmed their interest in the Uruguayan, who has netted 27 times in 26 games for the Serie A side in all competitions this year.

Following the departure of Mario Balotelli, it can be argued that manager Roberto Mancini has a place in his 25-man squad for another striker, with the Italian liking the idea of of four frontmen to choose from for his starting XI.

While Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez all rotate amongst one another for a first team place, adding Cavani to the trio would strengthen Mancini’s options going forward, that’s a guarantee. However, it will also likely see one of the aforementioned striking trident depart the Etihad Stadium as a result.

While boasting one of the strongest attack lines in the game, there would be no way for all four to play together, especially with young John Guidetti waiting in reserve. On top of that, with Cavani boasting a €60m release clause in a contract that doesn’t expire until 2017, any move would cost City a fair share of their transfer budget, not to mention the extortionate wages the striker would demand.

Either way, unless City are planning on selling another frontman over the summer, be it Dzeko or Tevez with the club unlikely to see Aguero, there is no way that they’d move for Cavani unless he was available at a cut price.
