Fernando Amorebieta: The man to plug Arsenal’s defence (Video)

Despite boasting the third strongest defence in the Premier League, there are football fans that believe Arsenal are in desperate need of a new centre-back. Conceding 29 goals all season, with only Manchester City and Chelsea bettering their record, a new defender is supposedly making his way to the Emirates Stadium in the summer.

The man is believed to be Athletic Bilbao starter Fernando Amorebieta. The Venezuelan has been a cornerstone of the Los Leones backline since his promotion to the senior side in 2005 and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the La Liga outfit since.

While Athletic may be struggling defensively, Amorebieta has continuously impressed in the heart of the defence, with the 27-year-old often charged with marshalling the backline in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI.

As such, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has identified the centre-back as a possible arrival once the transfer window reopens in the summer. While the Frenchman boasts Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in his defensive ranks, the possibility of Sebastian Squillaci filling the void in the heart of the defence is enough to make any Gunners fan shudder.

With Bacary Sagna admirably filling the void during the recent 1-0 win over Sunderland, it’s clear another defender is a necessity and Amorebieta could be the player that Wenger needs to bring in at the end of the season.
