The joy of a last minute goal in unparalleled and with the end of the season approaching they matter more than ever. Obviously, a thought has to be spared for the teams on the other end who have seen victory snatched from them with only seconds remaining.
The difference a last minute goal can have is invaluable and has been seen all over the country this weekend. Yesterday, Carlos Edwards’ last minute strike gave Ipswich a valuable three points which saw them move up to 14th in the table and six points off third bottom.
In the Premier League, Shaun Maloney scored a great free-kick to prevent QPR from winning and in the process all but ending their hopes of avoiding the drop. Likewise, a late goal for Spurs prevented Everton from closing the gap between the two teams but at the same time not doing either team much good in their bid for fourth.
Even Aston Villa got in on the act with a wonder goal from Lowton in the 87th minute helping them stave off relegation for another week. Wigan’s game in hand could easily drag both Villa and Sunderland down into 18th leaving the final relegation spot far from decided.
There’s still a lot to be decided from the Premier League down to League Two and over the few remaining weeks of the season it will become very evident the difference a goal can make.
