Everton to make a move for Cardiff City’s Malky Mackay

Everton are planning a formal approach to Cardiff City to talk to Malky Mackay about succeeding David Moyes at Goodison Park.

Moyes, who is taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, is involved in the process of finding his replacement at the Merseyside club and it is thought that Mackay is his preference.

Mackay, a fellow Scot, is well-known to Moyes and despite just winning promotion to the Premier League with the Welsh club, it is understood that a move to Goodison may be in his interest.

Mackay met Cardiff owner Vincent Tan in London last week, but the club said this was only to discuss transfer targets.

There are a whole host of candidates for the vacant hot-seat at Everton and chairman Bill Kenwright is determined to get the right man through the door.

Wigan Athletic’s Roberto Martinez has been stronly linked, while Celtic’s Neil Lennon and out of work Martin O’Neil have also been mentioned.

Swansea City’s Michael Laudrup has ruled himself out, and while Porto coach Vitor Pereira is an outside candidate, he could be interested.

Moyes, who will take charge of Everton at Goodison for the final time tomorrow against West Ham,  is expected to take coach Jimmy Lumsden with him to United but wholesale changes to the backroom staff are not expected with Ferguson’s assistant, Rene Meuelensteen in particular, highly rated.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Moyes is succesful in taking both Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini with him to Old Trafford in the summer.
