What next for Manchester City and Roberto Mancini?

A little over a year after Roberto Mancini led his side to their first English Premier League title in over 40 years, the Manchester City board have chosen to sack the manager, and are now on the look out for a replacement.

In the official statement from Manchester City’s website, it reads, “Despite everyone’s best efforts, the Club has failed to achieve any of its stated targets this year, with the exception of qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. This, combined with an identified need to develop a holistic approach to all aspects of football at the Club, has meant that the decision has been taken to find a new manager for the 2013/14 season and beyond”.

Mancini, who played for the likes of Sampdoria and Lazio during his career, was successful in his time managing Manchester City, with a win percentage of over 55%. With the huge amounts of money invested within the club, Mancini was able to lure in players like Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva to help his side capture that elusive Premier League title.

However, as reigning champions, City were unable to defend their title and lost out to arch-rivals Manchester United. The season for the men in blue from Manchester ended in disappointment, falling short in the FA Cup final thanks to a Ben Watson header in the 90th minute for Wigan Athletic. Many believe that it was this loss that was the icing on the cake and cost Roberto his job.

Roberto Mancini has been linked with clubs already, with the likes of big spenders Monaco looking to appoint him in charge, as well as Roma and Napoli. Even after the disappointing season he has had, he is a man who is still very much in demand.

As for Manchester City, it is believed that they will appoint Manuel Pelligrini – Malaga’s manager at the minute, which will be huge for the club seeing as Malaga sensation Isco could follow his manager in joining the Eastlands club.  Isco has been a target for Manchester City all season, as the youngster has enjoyed a breakthrough season with his Spanish club.

One thing is for certain, this change will have to bring more success to the club.
