Arsenal manager’s quote misses important point

We live in a culture where any quote can be sensationalised and used to sell paper or, in contemporary cases, to gain website hits.

For example, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger gave an interview with Al Jazzera this past week and during it he mentioned that he would monitor Wayne Rooney’s situation at Manchester United and, if he was available, would like to sign him.

He followed up that sentence by saying that any club would welcome Rooney as an addition. Of course they would, why wouldn’t you want a player of Rooney’s class to enhance your squad?

Numerous media outlets, however, only focussed on Wenger’s quote about wanting Rooney to join Arsenal despite what he said afterwards therefore taking it out of context and using that particular quote to garner more views and hits.

This is now common practice as gaining the most hits is now the name of the game, no matter what. It is an unfortunate occurrence but it works because when we browse the web and we see a ‘sensational’ story such as Rooney joining Arsenal we are implored to click and read the full story.

Of course, upon reading the full quote in context we then realise that what Wenger said was taken out of context and we are left somewhat disanointed.

The damage is done, however, as we have clicked on the story giving the website (or blog) the hit it so greatly desires.

In the era of ‘click’ culture, or the constant 24 hour news coverage, this is how points are won.
