Is Diego Costa bid the end of Liverpool’s resistance?
Are we finally reaching the end of one of the longest drawn out transfer sagas in recent memory?
Probably not, but the news of Liverpool’s £21m bid for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is an interesting move by the Merseyside club.
Unless you have been living under a rock you will have heard of Arsenal’s ambitious bid to prise Luis Suarez from Liverpool’s grasp, something which Brent Rodgers and Team USA have said will absolutely never ever not in a million years happen. But everybody knows if Arsenal stump up £50m Liverpool will buckle and sell the talented, but troubled, Uruguayan.
This bid for Costa is intriguing and can be perceived in two ways.
The first is that Liverpool are looking to add quality to their squad and they believe that Costa is the perfect compliment to what has been a busy summer for the club. Also, and more importantly, they are hoping it will show Suarez that they mean business this season and that if he sticks around great things can be achieved.
Conversely, however, and this is all speculation remember, Liverpool may have resigned themselves to the fact that Suarez will be on his way (no use in keeping a player who doesn’t want to be there, right?) to north London and they are being very proactive in finding a replacement straightaway.
Diego Costa is a promising talent, no doubt, and this may be Liverpool’s last roll of dice to keep Suarez. Whether or not it is a successful attempt, however, is not clear cut and it appears that the striker has his heart set on leaving regardless of the furious denials that have come from the club’s hierarchy.
Similar to the Wayne Rooney situation between Manchester United and Chelsea; it may just be a matter of time before one side buckles. With deadline day just under a month away, expect to see a lot of fireworks.
