Why Arsenal Should Forget About A Striker And Sign A Centre-back

Following Arsenal’s 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa last Saturday, an Arsenal fan was filmed speaking passionately about his (and indeed everybody else’s) disillusionment with the club and the lack of spending over the summer.

The video has ‘gone viral’ (as they say) and has accumulated a significant amount of views, indicating that many Arsenal fans consider the chap in the video to be conveying the exact mood that is amongst the supporters now of frustration and dismay.

That was a week ago, and since then Arsenal defeated Fenerbahce 3-0 in Turkey which has essentially assured a passage into the group stages of the Champions League, but the same problems still remain. A mini crisis has been averted, but the fact is that due to Laurent Koscielny nearly getting his block knocked off Arsene Wenger had no choice but to move Bacary Sagna to center back because of a paucity of options on the bench.

This is Arsenal Football Club, and for a club of this stature there should be absolutely no excuses for not having more depth in the squad, especially at the back where they are one or two injuries away using midfielders to plug the gaps.

So whilst many are hoping for a big Karim Benzema-sized present to come walking through the door (which would be a good thing no doubt) it is critical that Wenger addresses the lack of options at the back. Due to Koscielny’s red card against Villa, Sagna will start at center back against Fulham on Saturday but surely Wenger realises that this is not a viable long term option?

And yet there has only been talk of recruiting a plethora of attacking players which is really quite worrying. A lot can happen over the next ten days and you have to hope that Wenger’s claim that Sagna is ‘one of the center backs in Europe’ is all tounge in cheek and that he does have his eye on one, if not two, additions the club could make that area of the pitch.

But who though? Mat Hummers of Borussia Dortmund? Dante of Bayern Munich? Dede from Brazil?

There are options out there and with transfer window nearing its conclusion anything could happen.
