Manchester United’s desire for a Paul Scholes replacement led them to Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, who is now residing at Old Trafford, but their midfield, in my eyes, still looks lacking. Here are five Serie A midfielders that I think David Moyes should be looking at to improve his midfield.
1) Arturo Vidal – Juventus
It goes without saying what a talent this man is. Vidal is an energetic central player who is just as comfortable making a tackle as he is taking a pop at goal.
So far this season he has made two appearances and scored twice, while also providing an assist. He has made five key passes so far and had six shots, but also made a total of 101 passes at the time of writing.
2) Fredy Guarin – Inter
The 27-year-old would add a bit of bite into the midfield but also benefit Robin van Persie up top. Although Guarin is not in the Wayne Rooney mould, the Colombian would provide a heap-full of assist throughout the season.
In his two Serie A games this season Guarin has claimed an assist and made six key passes, as well as having five shots at goal.
3) Hernanes – Lazio
The Brazilian is an alluring player to watch, mainly because of his creativity in the pass. He has so far reached his intended target with 89% of his passes while creating one assist from his three key balls. He has also had 10 shots at goal in his two Serie A games, which no one in the United midfield can currently get near to.
4) Emmanuel Badu – Udinese
Badu is slight of frame and like nothing that Old Trafford currently holds, giving reason why the Ghanian should be being looked at by the United officials. Badu injects pace into the Udinese team but also an enthusiasm that is contagious throughout.
The 22-year-old is a defensive player which would allow Marouane Fellaini to drive forward into the more attacking areas of the field. Badu has so far won four tackles, three interceptions and three clearances in his two games.
5) Luca Cigarini – Atlanta
Dubbed the new Andrea Pirlo, the 27-year-old has the vision and the technical facility to fill the boots of Paul Scholes. As well as patrolling the central areas, Cigarini likes to push forward and get involved in the attacking phases.
With an 86% pass accuracy and two assists already this season, Cigarini could be a very shrewd move indeed.
