This transfer story has hit me hard, being a Manchester United fan and all. The Daily Star, although not the most reputable publication in the world, are reporting that my favourite player at Old Trafford is said to be considering a move away from the club back to his homeland in Brazil. And no, it’s not Anderson, unfortunately. Nor is it Fabio. However it is a da Silva – Rafael.
United hold a huge number of options at right-back, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all capable of filling in, although the latter isn’t the most assured when it comes to playing full-back, and the recent signing of fellow South American Guillermo Varel could be the final straw for Rafael.
After a brilliant season last time out, the 23-year-old won his name on the back of my home shirt. Being a right-back myself during my school years I took an instant shining to him when he arrived at the club in 2008.
Although he has not played this season, the Brazil international appeared 28 times for United in the league last year, scoring three goals.
He won 59% of his duels, completed 84% of his passes and averaged seven defensive actions per game.
If you’re reading this Rafa, which I know you are – please don’t go.
