A lot has been said about Chelsea and their manager this week, but I still think they have what it takes to win the Premier League. Here are 10 factors that I back my argument up with.
1) Mourinho
The Special One plays to his teams’ strengths. He keeps things tight at the back and hit opponents on the break while exploiting their weaknesses. Mourinho is a winner and players love him, and with him at the helm they have every chance of trophies.
2) Gary Cahill
The centre-back has been brilliant so far this season. Last year he kept John Terry out of the team but this year he’s being deployed beside him, and he’s flourished. He has won 79% of his duels and averaged six defensive actions per game.
3) Branislav Ivanovic
For me, Ivanovic is the best defender in the Premier League, all things considered. He’s strong, versatile and has huge amounts of intelligence both on and off the ball.
4) Fortress
Stamford Bridge has been a fortress in the past and can be again. It has proved to be a tough place to come to, and while the likes of Manchester City also playing well at home, Chelsea are strong going away also.
5) Ramires
The Brazilian’s explosive performance are finally starting to be recognised and I for one am glad about that. He is also chipping in with goals as well as sterling defensive displays.
6) Eden Hazard
The Belgian is one of the most exciting players in Europe and has already made 14 chances for his colleagues. He is yet to score but continues to light up the English topflight.
7) Options
The strength in depth right through the squad is huge at the west London club. From the array of options in the attacking midfielder roles to the deeper positions and in defence, Mourinho has a squad capable of winning the league. A striker may be necessary in January, however.
8) Roman Abramovich
The Russian has won trophies, it’s as simple as that. His presence alone brings the best out of everyone at the club and he knows how to get what he wants.
9) Ruthless
We saw this week just how the Blues love to rip smaller teams apart. The 4-0 victory at Steaua Bucharest suggested that Mourinho is starting to demand a more clinical and ruthless approach from his players.
10) Media Pressure
Following on from that, the pressure that is being put on the club from the press is seemingly forcing a positive response from every involved. The likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Fernando Torres have all been criticised this season but have all done their talking on the pitch.
