The future of Xabi Alonso has grown uncertain over the last few weeks. The Spaniard has gone from a first team player under Jose Mourinho last term to a crocked, fringe player in the Spanish capital and whisper continue to gain momentum as to whether Carlo Ancelotti sees him as a key figure in the squad. Taking all that into consideration, the Daily Star are reporting that Los Blancos are unlikely to extend his contract at the club when it runs out at the end of the season. But where will he end up if he does leave?
Everything points towards a return to Anfield, with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers a big fan. Alonso’s admiration for the club he spent five years at, and won the Champions League with,is still strong – by his own admission – and a partnership with Steven Gerrard could well be rekindled. Although what was once a dynamic partnership in the middle would look more like technically-brilliant-but-static pairing.
The reports suggest that Mourinho is interested in smuggling him into Stamford Bridge from under the Scousers’ noses, however, as he looks to plug the gap that Ramires is supposedly going to leave in January.
No chance, in my opinion, but there you go.
Alonso crafted 48 chances last season and won 63% of his duels.
Will Rodgers bulk up his midfield with the pass-master, or will the Special One get his mitts on the Spaniard? Either way, I think there would be a lot of happy spectators should he return to England.
