The plethora of creativity that Chelsea currently hold behind the striker role is unbelievable, but that doesn’t stop everyone linking them with a number of others. Not only does the national press seem to pull names out of hats when it comes to transfer stories in the Premier League, but they insist on continuing the rumours until the point of exhaustion. The latest name in the press is Julian Draxler, who is attracting interest from a trio of topflight clubs.
The Daily Star are reporting that Chelsea are ready to bid big for the Germany international. But do they need him?
The Blues currently have Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Willian, Oscar, Frank Lampard and Andre Schurrle who can be deployed in the attacking berths.
Draxler made 45 chances last season, while Juan Mata more than doubled that on 95. Hazard also bettered that total with 65, as did Oscar on 47, but neither of the latter two scored more than him. Draxler scored 10 Bundesliga goals – Mata scored 12, Hazard nine and Oscar 4.
Draxler had by far the better duel success though with 60% of his individual battles coming off. Hazard won 58%, Mata won 55%, and Oscar won 53%.
Do Chelsea need the youngster? Well, with those three and the new arrivals of Willian and Schurrle you’d argue that no, no they didn’t.
