Gareth Bale vs Neymar – Comparing their starts in La Liga

When Gareth Bale’s transfer to Real Madrid commanded the biggest fee ever payed in football, it sparked debate on whether the Wales international was worth it, naturally. Whilst I won’t go into that debate, I will compare his start to that of Neymar’s over at Barcelona, who the Camp Nou side also splashed out on this summer, albeit earlier than Los Blancos.

Before I proceed, I want to point out that I know they are both wildly different players, as well as both being world class. Despite playing in the same positions, Bale is a powerful runner on the ball with devastating shooting, while Neymar takes the silky touch and is all about his technique and creativity.

Bale has mustered just two La Liga appearances so far this season as a result of injury, and his late arrival in the Spanish capital, but has scored a goal. He is yet to create a chance for his colleagues, but has a shot accuracy of 50%. He’s also made an appearances in the Champions League, as a substitute, and managed two shots.

Neymar on the other hand, who cost considerably less than the Welshman, has been flying – injury free. He has scored twice and created 13 opportunities for his team-mates, as well as winning 65% of his duels.

Although they have both had very different starts to their lives in La Liga, you would expect both to become essential parts to their respected sides.
